Solarigo and NSC develop multi-market control for solar and hybrid power plants
Solarigo Systems Oy has entered into a cooperation agreement with NSC EnergyOpti Oy (NSC) to develop solar and hybrid power plants into more versatile participants in the energy system. The collaboration targets multi-market optimisation of hybrid power plants and the operation of the Pertunmaa battery energy storage system.
Development work takes profitability to a new level
The role of solar power production has changed significantly in recent years. Not long ago, the purpose of a solar plant was simple: it was connected to the grid and output followed irradiation conditions. The evolving demands of the electricity market have since opened up new opportunities for solar power production and its control, beyond conventional power generation.
Negative and highly volatile electricity prices, combined with reserve market opportunities, have driven the development of versatile controllability for solar and hybrid power plants.
Multi-market optimisation adds value
Through this development work, several markets and control methods have been identified where a hybrid system — combining a solar power plant and a battery storage — can improve both the dispatchability and revenue streams of solar and battery assets alike.
Development of multi-market control for solar power is currently underway, with a pilot of the multi-market optimisation scheduled at Solarigo's power plant during summer 2026. The ultimate goal is to dispatch the entire hybrid system — solar plant and battery storage combined — across multiple markets in the most efficient way possible.
"The electricity market has changed in ways that demand a fundamentally new kind of controllability from solar power plants. Simply generating electricity is no longer enough — a plant must be able to respond to market signals and participate across multiple markets simultaneously. Our collaboration with NSC is a strategically important step for us: we are combining our solar power expertise with NSC's advanced optimisation and trading solutions to build the foundation for full market participation by hybrid power plants" says Antti Koskelainen, CEO of Solarigo Systems Oy.
NSC to operate Solarigo's Pertunmaa battery energy storage
As part of the collaboration, NSC will also take responsibility for operating the Pertunmaa Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). With NSC's broad expertise in electricity markets, the battery storage can be utilised to its full potential in continuously changing market conditions.
"We are excited to collaborate with Solarigo in developing the next generation of solar and hybrid power plant operations. As electricity markets become increasingly dynamic, renewable assets need to be managed intelligently across multiple markets to maximize both profitability and system value. By combining Solarigo’s expertise in solar energy with NSC’s advanced optimization and trading capabilities, we are creating a framework that enables solar power plants and battery storage systems to operate as a coordinated, market-responsive resource. The Pertunmaa BESS project is an important step toward unlocking the full potential of hybrid energy assets in Finland”, sums Jarkko Avikainen, CEO NSC EnergyOpti Oy.
